I lost track of the number of times I said “wow” today... that’s how awesome the scenery was!
We left Inverness today after a leisurely morning and headed for
our first stop - Loch Ness. It was gorgeous when we took a break to look for
Nessie. Alas, no luck.
Our next stop was Urqhart Castle, ruins right along the loch. We decided to take a quick photo and then be on our way to our next adventure, instead of walking down and taking a tour.
Glen Coe. We kept hearing how beautiful the area is and it did not disappoint. It was “wow” after “wow” after “wow”. We just kept turning corners and being amazed at the beauty. We ended up stopping every 15 minutes because it was just so majestic.
At one of
the stops we couldn’t decide which direction was most beautiful, so we stood
there turning in circles and taking photos. We looked at one another and just
said, “this is amazing. We are so lucky to see this.” It was one of those
moments where you realize how blessed you are and how huge and majestic our
world is.
Somewhere along the route we came
upon a herd of Highland cows and some of their cute little sheep we see
everywhere.
In Glen Etive we saw several
herds of red deer. We couldn’t get super close and the phone doesn’t have a zoom,
so you’ll have to make out what you can in our photos. These were taken when we
stopped on a side road and walked toward the herd. You can see the leader of the herd, who we nicknamed Antlers, kept us in his sights. If we tried to get close he'd move the herd away. Well played, Antlers.
When taking a trip like this you
never know what you might stumble upon. This time it was the Bridge of Oich. It
was built in 1854 and is just adorable! We stopped and walked the bridge. There
was a sign saying the bridge had a limit of 50 people on it at one time and I
understand why...the bridge wobbles like the rope bridge on a playground. And
my husband liked to bounce on it to hear me squeal. It was a fun and unexpected
site, and the place where Brian found my Scotland heart.
More majesty ahead of us, before
finally making our way back towards the big city. Our last stop was something I
had been looking forward to seeing - the kelpies. I caught the first glimpse of
them from the freeway and they were HUGE! We parked and walked up to them and
they were even more gorgeous up close. They are 100 feet tall and pay homage to
the role horses have played in building Scotland. Pay close attention to Brian standing in front of one of the status and me in front of the other. Look how tiny we are!
After leaving the kelpies we
returned our rental car and had dinner. Now we’re getting packed up and ready
to move on tomorrow. Where will this adventure take us next?
